Ativan Addiction – Multi-Use Benzodiazepine can be Physically Addictive

Ativan addiction seems an unlikely, unfortunate outcome for a benzodiazepine commonly used in the treatment of substance abuse withdrawal. The reality is that Ativan can be both physically and psychologically addictive. Ativan, or lorazepam in its generic form, can also be prescribed for anxiety, vomiting, nausea, pre-medication, seizures and insomnia.

Addictions researchers are keenly interested in the overuse and abuse of prescription medication. One recent, innovative method that allows addiction researchers to track trends and developments in Ativan addiction and other prescription medication addictions is through search frequency research. This research often generates interesting and sometimes surprising results.

Ativan Withdrawal – Frequent Queries for Several Different Benzodiazepines

Queried just under 6,800 times in a one-year period (see graphs below), the phrase “ativan withdrawal” indicates a growing concern about the effects of Ativan withdrawal, which include vomiting, sweating, cramping and convulsions.

Several other benzodiazepine queries are also of interest in this study. Valium, one of the first benzodiazepines used in the treatment of anxiety, was queried about half as much Ativan at 3,682 times.
