What are barbiturates? Barbiturates are a class of drugs derived from barbituric acid that serve to slow down the central nervous system. Although barbiturates have generally been replaced by benzodiazepines as a sedative or treatment for anxiety, they are still in use as a surgical anesthetic and as an anticonvulsant for seizure disorders. First introduced for medical use in the early 1900’s, barbiturates addictions have plagued hundreds of thousands of individuals, including celebrities like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix and Judy Garland.

Addiction researchers now have a new tool for tracking and evaluating barbiturates addictions. This innovative technology analyzes comprehensive listings of online searches for barbiturates and related phrases. These results offer many insights into barbiturate use and abuse.

List of Barbiturates – Astonishing Number of Search Results

In Graph 1 below, after the general but most common phrase “facts on barbiturates”, the second most frequently searched phrase is “list of barbiturates” with 12,459 queries over a one-year period. This is not surprising, considering that the list of barbiturates is extensive. Commonly abused barbiturates include Amobarbital, also known by its street name, downers; Pentobarbital, known as newbies; and Phenobarbital, also called “purple hearts”. Incidentally, “street names for barbiturates” are also of interest to internet users, with this phrase garnering just over 2,900 annual searches.

Curiosity about the history and mystery of this “truth serum” could account for searches for interesting stories on barbiturates. In fact, there are four separate listings in Graph 1 that reference variations of the phrase “negative stories about barbiturates”.
