GHB Addictions – Illegal Substance Use on the Rise

Although GHB, a Schedule I drug, was once considered non-addictive, GHB addictions are real and can develop after only a few weeks of regular use. Gamma-hydroxybutric acid is used as a general anesthetic but was also once used to treat clinical depression, narcolepsy, insomnia and to improve athletic performance. With recreational use continually increasing, as well as its abuse as a “date rape drug”, GHB has recently been rendered illegal in most countries.

A new innovative form of addictions research helps substance abuse professionals track trends and developments of GHB and other illegal and prescription drugs. The following graphs present query results for searches containing the acronym GHB and the word gamma-hydroxybutric acid. The results are illuminating.

Gamma-Hydroxybutric Acid – Potentially Fatal Side Effects

GHB is a powerful central nervous system depressant. A few symptoms of its use and abuse include respiratory distress, unconsciousness, amnesia, hallucinations, nausea and vomiting and even death.

Given its hazardous side effects, is it the dangers of GHB that individuals are searching for? Not necessarily. Graph 1 below demonstrates that one major preoccupation of searchers is “how to make GHB” (23,489 occurrences in one year) or “buy GHB” (12,988). There is also definite interest in GHB substitutes, as indicated by the phrase “ghb analogs” (5,548). The darker side of GHB use, as evidenced by the phrases “ghb death”, (1,460) and “ghb rape”, is also revealed within the top 30 phrases.

“How to Make GHB” Tops the List

The three top phrases in Graph 1, “make GHB”, “how to make GHB”, and “ghb recipe”, far surpass any other searches related to GHB, with an astonishing 84,590 searches. In fact, at least 13 phrases in Graph 1 can be related to making GHB. Graph 2 is also littered with words that relate to the making of GHB including “make/making”, “recipe/recipes”, “ingredients” and “homemade”. Sadly, this relationship comes up time and again in drug searches.

One further explanation for the demand for GHB recipes and ingredients is its use as a “date rape” drug. Because of its sedative and amnesiac effects, when slipped into a victim’s food or drink, it makes them vulnerable to assault.
