Hydrocodone Addictions – Acetaminophen Content Discourages Some Addicts

Although hydrocodone addictions seem to be on the rise, some opiate addicts prefer single entity drugs. The main reason for this preference is the presence of acetaminophen in hydrocodone medications. Since ingesting between 10 to 15 grams of acetaminophen in less than a 24-hour period can lead to hepatotoxicity or liver failure, savvy addicts will try to extract a portion of the acetaminophen by using hot or cold water.

In order to help identify trends and developments concerning all types of addictions, including hydrocodone addictions, researchers now have access to powerful new technology. By analyzing specific online search terms for a one-year period, researchers can determine both the interest in online procurement of prescription medications and general information about these drugs.

Significant Query Numbers for Information on Hydrocodone Addiction

Overwhelming, the queries in Graph 1 below center on the purchase of hydrocodone. “Buy hydrocodone” (543,450 searches) and “buy hydrocodone online”(129,193) leave no interpretation as to the searchers’ intentions. What is not clear is whether the desire for hydrocodone is for recreational use or a legitimate requirement for prescription pain medication.

“Hydrocodone addiction” and “hydrocodone withdrawal” also garnered a significant amount of searches (42,394). Queries for “hydrocodone cough” information are also peppered throughout Graph 1. In fact, “cough” was the 29th most commonly used word in hydrocodone searches (see Graph 2), which makes sense since hydrocodone is also used as an anti-cough agent.

The prevalence of searches for phrases such as “hydrocodone without a prescription” (117,577) are obvious attempts at self-medicating or illicit usage. Variations are many and include “hydrocodone without prescription” and “hydrocodone no prescription” (151,987 total). This dangerous trend of online sales without a valid prescription continues to flourish.
