Society’s Addiction to Viagra

After its launch, Viagra became extremely popular and the center of intense media attention. For a time, it seemed society had developed an addiction to Viagra. Between the frequent news articles and an intense advertising campaign, Viagra became a continual water cooler topic and a common focus of comedians’ monologues.

Not surprisingly, this study found that one focus of internet users is the procurement of Viagra online. In Graph 1, “Viagra online” and three related phrases garnered an astonishing 2,199,269 queries over a one-year period. In Graph 2, the word “buy” is the 6th single most commonly used word in searches. Additionally, “Viagra uk” received 330,062 searches alone. This may be related to the fact that in the U.K., Viagra is now available as an over-the-counter medication.

Comparison of Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra Dominate Queries

Comparisons between Cialis, Levitra and Viagra occupy a huge majority of the searches in Graph 1. The most commonly searched phrase is “Levitra Viagra” with just over three million queries. Incredibly, 23 more search phrases involve a comparison between two or all three of these erectile dysfunction drugs. This is almost expected, considering, in 2006, approximately 400 million dollars was spent on advertising, and sales reached an estimated three billion dollars.

Graph 3 is almost exclusively filled with additional drug comparison searches. The first phrase “compare Cialis Levitra” with 306,601 queries is followed by 43 more Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra comparisons. Clearly, internet users are educating themselves about the drawbacks and benefits of these three medications.
