Cocaine Addiction Research

Clear Haven’s search frequency research has opened a new window into the heart and mind of cocaine addicts and their families. Overshadowing that, though, is the sheer prevalence of cocaine related searches, over 120,000 per year. Considering that Neilson/NetRatings estimate the number of English speaking active Internet users at around 200 million (http://www.clickz.com/stats/web_worldwide), it suggests that 1 in about 1500 Internet users search cocaine-related concepts every year. Add to that the over 450,000 drug addiction related searches that don’t specify the substance and there could be as many as 1 in 500 Internet users searching to understand or resolve cocaine addiction per year.

Crack Cocaine Addiction - a Middle-Class Problem?

Cocaine addiction, at 25%, ranks far behind heroin addiction, at 53%, in the prevalence of substance abuse in the United States, according to addictions research statistics (http://www.cocaineaddiction.com/cocaine_coke.html).

Yet, when it comes to online search frequencies of these two specific phrases, the term “cocaine addiction” is typed in search engines more often - over 115,000 times per year; compared to some 74,000 for “heroin addiction”. One explanation may relate to the greater prevalence of middle class crack cocaine users vs. heroin users, who simply have more access to the Internet than the more poverty-stricken heroin users and their families.

Thousands Seek Cocaine Addiction Treatment for Loved Ones

Although “cocaine addiction treatment” is one of the most commonly searched phrases related to cocaine addictions (13,269 queries/year), clearly it is often family members and friends who are seeking help for a loved one. Over 14,000 searches per year contain “cocaine”, “addiction” and the words “signs” or “symptoms”, the first stage of a family or friend beginning an intervention process.

The following graphs highlight prevalent words and concepts associated with “cocaine addiction” searches. Most of the terms have been pointed out in the above text, with the exception of “prozac”, which ranks a surprising 7th on the list. More detailed info can be found in Graphs 4 & 5.

Insights from Drugs Associated with Cocaine ...

... are plentiful. The most prominent is Prozac, an anti-depressant that, like cocaine, affect serotonin levels in the brain. Another anti-depressant that is prominent is Bupropion as well as methamphetamine. A significant number of users of these drugs are apparently unaware of the dangers of mixing them with cocaine.

Often search frequency analysis suggests solutions as well as concerns. For example the modest appearance of “Topiramate” was searched by the more knowledgeable, who are aware of studies in the use of Topiramate, an antiseizure drug, to reduce cocaine dependence during addiction treatment. Interesting that, through subsequent annual studies, we will be able to track trends in its acceptance simply by is prevalence in cocaine-related searches.

Also interesting is the fact that these search frequency studies, in many ways, can yield more useful information than the search results themselves. In a Google search for “cocaine addiction treatments”, Topiramate is not mentioned in a single title or description among the over 500 Google results. But in a search frequency study it sticks out like a sore thumb, as it is one of the top 100 words associated with cocaine by the searchers themselves.
