Fetal Alcohol Syndrome – 100% Preventable

According to the Fetal Alcohol Disorders Society, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is the leading cause of brain injury in children. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is 100% preventable and is solely caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol. Fetal alcohol exposure has been linked to up to 60 disease conditions, disabilities and birth defects falling under the umbrella term, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. This diverse continuum of issues can range from mild behavioural and intellectual issues to profound disabilities or even premature death.

The following study tracks, quantifies and analyzes searches for “fetal alcohol syndrome” and related phrases for a one-year period. The results of this study can help addictions specialists pinpoint areas of growing concern and identify new trends concerning this very serious issue.

FAS / ARND / FAE / ARBD – All Part of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome), ARND (Alcohol-Related Birth Defects), FAE (Fetal Alcohol Effects) and ARBD (Alcohol-Related Birth Defects) combine to make up what is known as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Research conducted by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration) and the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Center for Excellence, found that each year up to 40,000 babies are born with FASD. In addition to the unfortunate ramifications for these children, this costs the U.S. medical system an average of four billion dollars a year.

This staggering number is reflected in the overwhelming number of searches for the above conditions. With 310,000 queries in just one year, FAS and related searches nearly parallel the amount of searches performed for “alcohol addiction” at 320,000 searches. (See alcohol addiction .) Clearly, this is a societal crisis with far reaching repercussions for the health, education, and criminal justice systems.

The eighth most commonly searched phrase in Graph 1 is “fetal alcohol syndrome pictures”, while in Graph 2 “pictures” is the seventh most commonly used word with 10,989 queries. Pictures of FAS babies and children help to identify specific physical and facial characteristics unique to those suffering from FAS. These features include a smooth philtrum (the groove between the nose and upper lip), small eye openings, a thin upper lip, as well as certain growth deficiencies.
