Gambling Addiction – Diverse Definitions
“Gambling addiction” has various interpretations. Gamblers Anonymous defines gambling addiction as “an illness, progressive in its nature, which can never be cured, but can be arrested”. After a thorough gambling investigation, Statistics Canada defined an individual with a gambling addiction as “someone who has experienced negative consequences from gaming and who gambles more than 5 times a year”.
Regardless of the definition, medical professionals and addiction researchers agree that gambling can have disastrous consequences for gambling addicts and their families. Furthermore, in order to provide adequate and successful treatment, it is essential to keep abreast of all trends and developments in gambling addiction. One recent, effective tool is the quantification and analysis of query results from online searches for the phrase “gambling addiction” and related terms.
How Prevalent is the Gambling Problem?
According to research from Statistics Canada, 6.3% of individuals are at risk for developing a gambling problem, with 0.6% of the population considered problem gamblers. While a gambling problem can have devastating financial consequences, a gambling addiction has also been linked to depression, theft, domestic abuse, family break-up, homelessness and even suicide.
Surprisingly, after examining the nearly 350,000 annual searches for gambling-related topics, in Graph 1 below, the term “gambling addiction” is only the eighth most frequently searched phrase with 41,946 queries. The next phrase indicating a concern about gambling is not found until Graph 3, where “gambling problems” appears as the 43rd most popular query (8,935 searches). This begs the question, what are the most popular searches?

Is Online Compulsive Gambling Our Biggest Issue?
From the search results in Graph 1, it can be surmised that “online gambling” is quickly becoming a dominant form of gambling (with 340,000 searches a year). Several other searches indicate an obvious interest in this form of gambling including “internet gambling”, “gambling sites”, “gambling websites” and “online casino gambling”.
This result is particularly disturbing given the conclusions of a U.K. Gambling Commission that considers 75% of people who gamble online as “either problem or pathological gamblers”. This compares to only 20% of individuals who frequent land-based casinos.
