Heroin abuse is a serious problem worldwide. Alarming trends show that, of first time users in the United States, 1.5% are in the 9th grade. Eventually, tolerance develops as a user increases the dosage in order to achieve the same effect or intensity. Heroin abuse is the result of higher amounts of the drug entering the body and leading to physical dependence and addiction.

Modern addictions research shows interesting trends in online search behaviors. This innovative technology gathers and analyzes thousands of pieces of data to provide insight on the specific words and phrases that are typed into search engines. Plotting the frequency of searched terms relating to various addictions topics, including heroin abuse, demonstrates global inclinations that are valuable to addictions research and treatment.

Symptoms of Heroin Abuse - Symptoms/Signs - Is there a Difference?

This progressive research study also demonstrates that the tendency of those searching for information about heroin abuse are using the exact term “heroin abuse” roughly 8 times more often than any other word combinations, as evidenced in Graph 1.

Interestingly, there are almost three times the amount of searches using “signs”, such as “signs of heroin abuse” (939), as compared to “symptoms”, such as “symptoms of heroin abuse” (385).
