The most commonly searched phrases revealed in Graph 1 below are not altogether surprising. “Bank of Montreal” tops the list with just over 100,000 searches. Founded in 1817, the Bank of Montreal is Canada’s oldest bank with more than 1,100 branches across Canada.

Canada’s national sport is referenced in second place, with “Montreal Canadiens” recorded 57,101 times. By the way, did you know that as one of the original six NHL teams, the Montreal Canadiens have won more Stanley Cups than any other team in history?

Rounding out the top three is “Montreal Gazette”, one of Montreal’s leading newspapers. Another newspaper “Journal de Montreal” was the 8th most popular phrase. No doubt, the explosive rise of online print media is responsible for these rankings.

Moving further down the list, the Montreal International Jazz Festival has two prominent searches “Montreal jazz” and “Montreal jazz festival” totaling 25,618 queries. This annual summer festival, which began in 1980, is now the largest jazz festival in the world, attracting over 2 million people a year.

Montreal Drug Rehab – Does it Make the List?

Although “Montreal drug rehab” does not make the list of commonly searched phrases, there are many prominent searches that relate to the not so mainstream side of Montreal. “Montreal escorts”, along with two other related phrases received a total of 42,256 queries. In Graphs 1 and 3, Montreal strip clubs had three separate references totaling 23,625 searches. In addition, the somewhat vague phrase, “Montreal sex” received 6,467 queries. One may surmise that these searches are somehow related to Montreal’s former nickname, “Sin City”. It received this name after it became a haven for Americans looking for alcohol during the Prohibition period in the U.S. after World War 1. It also became famous for the quality and quantity of burlesque shows during the same period.
