Overdose – Serious Subject Garners Frequent Searches 

With approximately 17,000 online searches a year, the term “overdose” and related queries are of significant interest to addictions researchers and specialists alike. Obviously, an overdose is the most serious consequence of substance abuse.

Tracking and analyzing specific overdose queries can help identify changes and trends in the growing issue of addictions. The frequency with which individuals are searching for overdose information can point to the popularity and dangers of certain abusive substances.

Overdose on Ambien – Growing Awareness of the Dangers of Sedative Hypnotic

The danger of overdose on Ambien was recently brought to the forefront with its role in the accidental overdose death of actor Heath Leger. Even before this tragic event, however, there was a significant amount of research pointing to the dangers of taking more than the recommended dosage of this sedative hypnotic, or combining it with other CNS-depressant agents.

In spite of a significant amount of queries (10,334 over a one-year period), “overdose on ambien” was not the most frequently searched overdose-related term. Interestingly, “tylenol overdose” and “acetaminophen overdose” were the most popular (with 21,594 combined searches). According to FDA statistics, an estimated 56,000 emergency room visits each year are a result of acetaminophen overdoses. Annually, 100 individuals a year will die of unintentionally overdosing on this common pain medication.

How Do Illicit Drug Overdose Searches Rank?

Although the pop culture mystique about “drug overdose” involves the use of illicit drugs sold in back alleys, according to search frequency rankings, illegal drug overdose queries are not frequently searched. In Graph 1, the first two queries for illegal substances are the 14th and 15th ranked search phrases, “heroin overdose” (5,396) and “cocaine overdose” (5,395). Their combined total is only 722 queries more than the next two phrases “vitamin d overdose” (5,067) and “vitamin c overdose” (4,966). Similarly, in Graph 3, the only two searches for drug overdose information involving illegal drugs are searches for “acid” and “marijuana”.
