Quebec – A Province Rich in Culture and Tradition
The province of Quebec is well known for a variety of reasons – its remarkable landscape, its rich French heritage, its progressive arts and cultural scene, and its always-controversial politics. It is the largest and the second most populated province in Canada, with more than 7.5 million people.
Online searches for Quebec topics are as varied and diverse as the province itself. Are the most popular queries about Quebec related to its colorful history, majestic landscape or numerous attractions? The answers, which are compiled through comprehensive search phrase analysis, may surprise you.
Province of Quebec – Lotteries, Bridges, Hockey and More
The two most commonly searched phrases identified in Graph 1 below are generic in nature and garner general information about both the province of Quebec as well as the capital, Quebec City. It turns out that over 184,000 inquiries were made for these phrases over a one-year period. Other popular searchers are more curious.
With 37,056 queries, the phrase “Loto Quebec” is the 4th most popular phrase. Substantial, but not a huge number, considering that according to the LotoQuebec website, as of March 31, 2007, the loto has contributed 1.391 billion dollars in dividends to the Quebec government and 20.8 million dollars to Quebec non-profit organizations.
The 18th most commonly searched phrase is “Quebec bridge” with a related phrase in Graph 3 “Quebec bridge disaster” (4,031). These searches relate to the world famous bridge that crosses the St. Lawrence River. This bridge, with the longest antilevered bridge span in the world, collapsed twice during its construction and by its completion in August of 1917 had killed 89 workers.
Also, the phrase “Quebec Nordiques” received a noteworthy 4,226 queries, even though this NHL hockey team moved to Colorado in 1995.

Quebec City – Carnivals and Culture
An extremely popular search in both Graph 1 and 3 is about Quebec City’s annual winter carnival that attracts over 1 million participants a year. The phrase “Carnival de Quebec” and three related phrases prompted 42,513 queries in one year.
The search phrase “old Quebec” and several other similar terms garnered 71,807 queries. The upper and lower town of Old Quebec is an extremely popular tourist attraction, with architecture reminiscent of Old World Europe. Searches for Quebec's largest city, Montreal, are also of interest.
