Masturbation Addiction – Isolative Form of Sexual Addiction

According to Robert Weiss, Executive Director of the Sexual Recovery Institute, masturbation addiction is one of the most secret and isolative forms of sexual addiction and one for which individuals are reluctant to seek help. Because compulsive masturbation has fewer direct social, financial or legal consequences than other forms of repetitive sexual behaviour, individuals will only seek treatment when they can no longer tolerate the anxiety, obsession and isolation related to masturbation addiction.

The following study is an examination of search phrases containing the word “masturbation”. This sexual addictions investigation is extremely useful in keeping pace with trends in sexual addiction and, to a lesser extent, the role the Internet may play in the proliferation of this type of addictive behaviour. 

Female Masturbation – Most Commonly Searched Phrase

Topping the list of “masturbation” searches is “female masturbation” at 1,822,871 searches (see Graph 1 below). This is almost double the inquiries for the next most commonly searched phrase, “male masturbation” at 1,030,470. Another prominent theme in Graph 1 is a quest for masturbation “techniques” and “tips”.

One phrase that is noticeably absent from both Graphs 1 and 3 is “masturbation addiction”. Even in Graph 4, a representation of the raw data used in this study, “masturbation addiction” does not appear. There are, however, 9,061 searches with the word “addiction” in the search phrase in Graph 5, as well as the words “consequences”, “addictions”, “excessive” and “addicted”. Masturbation Stories – Searches for Pornographic Material

In both Graphs 1 and 3, the overwhelming majority of searches are most likely for pornographic material, as illustrated by “masturbation stories”, “masturbation movies” and “masturbation videos”. As well, many of the individual words in Graph 2 indicate very specific proclivities and preferences. This finding is not particularly surprising considering the association between pornography addiction and masturbation addiction.
