XXX – Movie Rating Symbol Becomes Porn Industry Marketing Ploy

The symbol XXX has become synonymous with the porn industry. In actuality, this symbol had a somewhat mundane start. In 1968, the Motion Picture Association of America came up with a rating system for movies after numerous complaints about violence, nudity and sex in films. Originally, the ratings included G, M, R and X. While some of rating symbols were trademarked, the symbol X that typically indicated strong adult content was not. As such, pornographers began to use it as part of a marketing ploy to promote their films. Eventually the symbol X was changed to NC-17. Pornographers then added a few more X’s and XXX began to represent hardcore pornographic content.

The following study is an analysis of online searches for phrases containing the symbol XXX. The results of this study are of particular interest to addictions researchers because of their connection to a rising trend in sexual addictions and the proliferation of compulsive sexual behaviour.

Compulsive Sexual Behaviour – Do Search Numbers Indicate a Problem?

With almost 4,000,000 queries in a one-year period, search phrases for XXX garner an astounding amount of interest. Whether or not this demonstrates evidence of a rise in compulsive sexual behaviour, it certainly demonstrates the popularity of XXX resources in online activities.

The searches in both Graphs 1 and Graph 3 below are varied and contain some unlikely, almost contrasting phrases. Word combinations with XXX include “videos”, “movies”, “stories”, “clips”, and “pics” as well as surprising words like “disney” and “cartoon”. As one would expect, celebrity searches also figure prominently, as shown by the appearance of “britney spears” and “paris hilton”.
