Substance Abuse Services – The Demand Is High

Unfortunately, the demand for substance abuse services in today’s society continues to grow at an alarming rate. Whether individuals require substance abuse treatment, information, statistics, or prevention information, this topic is in high demand.

An innovative new form of addictions research is helping to track and quantify the search results for online queries surrounding substance abuse. This tool allows substance abuse professionals and addiction researchers to identify growing concerns and focus their energy where it is needed most. The following graphs form an analysis of query results for the phrase “substance abuse” and related searches over a one-year period. Some of the findings may surprise you.

Teen Substance Abuse – Prominent in Graph 1

Regrettably, Graph 1 uncovers the phrase “teen substance abuse” and three related phrases as a popular topic (47,169 queries). This trend is further supported by 2005 U.S. Department of Justice statistics on teen substance abuse:

• 66.5% of high school students had used alcohol in the past year
• 31.5% had used marijuana
• 9% had used opiates
• 5.7% had used cocaine, and the list goes on

Another interesting search involves queries for “army substance abuse” and “army substance abuse programs”. These two searches rank in 13th and 14th position in Graph 1, with 15,634 queries. Evidently, the establishment of Army Substance Abuse Program (ASAP) in 1971 was an important step.

Substance Abuse Treatment – Many Sectors of Society Identified

There are several interesting searches that specifically identify certain sectors of society in need of substance abuse treatment. In Graph 1, the 12th most commonly searched phrase is “substance abuse among nurses” (8,140 queries). This is somewhat surprising because although health care professionals have better access to potentially abusive substances, substance abuse among nurses is no greater than that of the general public.

Graph 3 identifies other groups, including “elderly substance abuse”, “African American substance abuse” and “Christian substance abuse”. Clearly, substance abuse treatment can and should be individualized to meet the specific needs of individuals and groups.
