Narcotics – Centuries Old Drug Continues to Plague Society

Narcotics refer to opium and opium derivatives, as well as their synthetic or semi-synthetic substitutes. Although Galen, an ancient Greek physician, first coined the word “narcotic”, its use and abuse has continued to be a serious societal issue throughout the centuries. In fact, recent statistics from DAWN (Drug Awareness Warning Network) reveal that in 2001 there were 90,232 emergency room visits related to narcotic analgesic abuse, a 117% increase since 1994.

Addictions researchers are continually looking for new ways to monitor drug abuse trends and keep up to date with changes and new developments. The following graphs are part of a search frequency study tracking and analyzing online query rates for the word “narcotics” and related phrases. These graphs provide some interesting insights into query habits and the frequency with which individuals are searching for specific information.

Narcotic Pain Killers – Internet Sale of Narcotics Extremely Popular

According to Graph 1 below, there is considerable interest in the procurement of narcotics over the Internet. “Buy narcotics” (8,752) is the fourth most commonly searched phrase, followed by “narcotics without prescription” (5,857 queries). Addiction researchers are particularly interested in these types of queries because of the potential for narcotic abuse.

Other general searches of note include “about narcotics” (4,346), “facts about narcotics” (3,946) and “examples of narcotics” (2,756). These types of searches garner information about narcotic analgesics and related opiate and opioid variations.

Narcotics Anonymous Searches Dominate Graphs

With almost 171,000 queries, “narcotics anonymous” received 146, 570 more searches than the next most commonly searched phrase “narcotic pain”. Narcotics Anonymous was started in 1953 and based its program on the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. It now boasts more than 43,900 meetings in over 127 countries worldwide.
