No Prescription Necessary – Popularity of Online Pharmacies Growing

Beginning around the year 2000, online pharmacies began operating over the Internet. While most of these pharmacies operate legitimately and require a doctor’s prescription, there are many online pharmacies that advertise “no prescription necessary”, “no prior prescription required”, or “free online doctor consultation”.

Substance abuse professionals are concerned about the proliferation of illegal online pharmacies because of the obvious potential for abuse from those suffering from addictions. Search frequency research enables addictions specialists to track “no prescription” online queries and analyze the popularity of this method of acquiring prescription medication.

Phentermine No Prescription – Appetite Suppressant Extremely Popular

Graph 1 of this study (below) shows that the most commonly searched phrase is “phentermine no prescription” (with 90,475 queries over a one-year period). The difference between this phrase and the second most commonly searched phrase, “online without a prescription” is almost 40,000 queries.

Combined with similar phrases, including Adipex (the commercial trade name for phentermine) and “diet pills” searches, the total is a remarkable 246,936 queries. Given that phentermine is an amphetamine and a Schedule IV controlled substance, there is obvious concern about taking this drug without medical supervision.

Drugs without Prescription – Red Flag Searches for Addiction Specialists

Clearly, searches for “drugs without prescription” are an obvious red flag for addictions specialists. Beyond the danger of individuals with addictions obtaining drugs without a prescription, there is the added problem of dealers buying these drugs for cheap prices and then selling them on the street for profit.

The drugs that seem to be the most popular are also those with the most potential for abuse. In both Graphs 1 and 3, besides phentermine, popular medication searches include pain relievers like Vicodin, hydrocone, and Ambien, as well as anti-depressants such as Valium, Xanax, Zoloft, and Prozac. Graph 3 also includes a significant number of generic searches for “narcotics without prescription” (5,857) and “pain meds without prescription” (5,252).
