Diet Pills/Morning-After Pills/Breast Enhancement Pills – A Study in Contrasts

Online queries for “pills” are both varied and surprising. Search phrases range from “diet pills” to “morning-after pills” to “breast enhancement pills”, along with a long list of others.  “Pill identification” is also an extremely popular search query.

Search frequency research is an innovative new tool that allows for the quantification and analysis of online search phrases. After the collection of raw data over a one-year period, the results of these online query studies are presented in convenient bar graphs. This study on the word “pills” and related queries provides valuable insight into the search habits of online users. The conclusions of such studies are of particular interest to addiction researchers.

Weight Loss Pills can have Devastating Side Effects

In Graph 1 below, searches for pills to aid weight loss occupy the majority of searches. The phrase “diet pills” was the most frequently searched phrase with 70,159 queries. Combined with a similar search for “weight loss pills”, this theme total reaches 220,985. The graphs clearly reflect the popularity of this weight loss method, despite potentially dangerous side effects, which include stroke, heart attack, tachycardia and sometimes death.

“Pill identification” is also an extremely popular search in this study. In Graph 1, “pill identification” and “pill identifier” are the second and third most commonly searched two-word combinations. There are also several searches in Graph 3 with very specific identification criteria: “purple”, “blue”, “little”, “jagged”, etc..  Pharmacies, hospitals and universities, in hopes of eliminating some of the accidental poisoning deaths that occur every year, often sponsor pill identification sites.

Avoiding pregnancy seems to be another prominent theme, as indicated by frequent searches for “morning after pill”, “birth control pill” and “abortion pill”. “Enlargement” and “enhancement” of the penis and breasts also seem important to “pill” searchers as well.
